Sister Aloysius vs. Sister James
When two people are experiencing a doubt, they may have different reactions because of their personalities, attitudes and form of expression. This is the case of the film "Doubt" and the two nuns from “Sts. Nicholas School”, New York, who had doubts that the priest Flynn sexually abused one of the children of the school. The difference in the actions of these two sisters (Aloysius and James), their contrasting personalities and their distinct form of expression are the differences that influenced the way to handle their doubt.
A difference between them is their attitudes. Sister Aloysus constantly acts like a strict person; her severe attitude makes her unsympathetic. All the students are afraid of her, and the punishments that she imposed on them. She also firmly believed in the power of discipline, and she had a conservative attitude. In contrast to Sister Aloysus, Sister James was more submissive and flexible; she was closer to children, and the children had more confidence in her. Sister James approached the children with compassion and sympathy.
Another difference is personality. On the one hand, Sister Aloysus was a severe, moody and entrusting woman. For example, the simple fact of doubting Father Flynn without evidence, or the fact of began to investigate and do her best in order to the priest being expelled from school; this shows that she is a stubborn and prejudiced person. Also the punishments that she gave to the children show that she is a strict person. While Sister James was naive because she believed what the other noun said, or simply she didn’t want to get into troubles. She was quiet, compassionate and more sympathetic with the children.
The way the two nouns expressed are different. Commonly, Sister Aloysus spoke in a serious manner, and she had a very deep and frustrated tone. When she expressed towards others she made in an authority tone; this is why all the students and nouns did what she want, and everybody was scare because of her tone. On the other hand, Sister James had a subtle and friendly tone; that’s why children felt more comfortable with her. She expressed with confidence and compassion.
In conclusion, Sister Aloysus had no evidence to blame the Father, but she came to the point of lying in order to Father Flynn leave the school. However, Sister James stayed with doubt, and she would not pursue the subject to avoid problems, or maybe she refused to repent of anything in the future. The two of them handled in a different way their doubts because of their different attitudes, distinct personality, and their singular way of expression.
